Visit to Plaka Beach

This is going to be a very short post!

Thursday May 22 was a perfect day for the beach - lots of sun and a high of 26C.  We are very lucky to have the bus stop with busses to the beaches just 30 seconds from the apartment.  We caught the noon bus to Plaka beach which is about two km further than Agios Prokopios beach where we were on Tuesday.

The bus dropped us at the furthest end of the beach.  Plaka is a 4 km sandy beach with beautiful turquoise waters.  It is a very tranquil beach.  While there are paid loungers scattered on the beach, most is just open sand.  Apparently, even in summer, this part of the beach is not crowded.  There was also a wonderful breeze on Thursday, which made our stay even more enjoyable.

There were not many people in the water, but two women near us went in for a while and I decided to take the plunge.  Once I got in, it was great.

We had a very relaxing time at this beautiful beach.

We caught the 3:25 bus back to Naxos Town.

The bus stop on the way back is a minute from the Church near us.  Unfortunately, it was closed, but I was able to get a close up photo.

We did a bit of grocery and bakery shopping and then Allan made a lovely fish dinner.  We had artichokes again, which are always a treat.  On Friday, we are planning to visit another mountainous village.

Wandering in Heraklion

 Wednesday May 7 was a warm day with a high of 30C.  We slept in and then had breakfast on the deck. Breakfast on the deck- fresh strawberries with our oatmeal Courtyard below We decided to head to the Central Market area, which, unfortunately, has a lot of tourist shops.   However, one alley has a fresh fish store and a few vegetable stores.  We definitely want to cook a few meals at the apartment. We walked by the landmark Morosini Fountain.  It is ringed by four water-spouting lions.  It was built in 1628 to dispense fresh water brought in by an aqueduct from the nearby mountains.  We would return to this square after we did our food shopping. Arriving in Heraklion and Free Tour

We left Toronto on Monday May 5 at 4:45 p.m. and had an uneventful flight to Amsterdam, arriving on-time at 6:00 a.m. A very short turnaround time to our next flight-- just a quick run through the airport to catch our 7:10 a.m. flight to Heraklion, Crete.   We arrived just before noon.  There is a seven hour time difference between Toronto and Heraklion.  Beautiful weather on our arrival-- sunny and 27C.  We caught the bus (just 1.20 euros) from the airport to the city centre.  Just a five minute walk to our AirBnb.   We are on the first floor (second floor in Canada) of a small apartment building which has an elevator.  We have a very nice light-filled bedroom with a small outdoor eating area and a small, efficient kitchen and bathroom.
